The acquisition of monographs represents the most important part of the increase in numbers of documents at the BNU, which comes as no surprise for an institution that focuses on the human and social sciences. Between 20 and 25 000 monographs are added each year, in most cases as a result of purchase (about two-thirds, on average), but also as gifts, exchanges, or through statutory deposit (about one-third of acquisitions). More than half these monographs are in languages other than French, reinforcing both the international dimension of the BNU and its role as a research library.
