June 2011 - Landscapes of Alsace and elsewhere

Are all the museums of Alsace in on the plot? You might be forgiven for thinking so if you take a look at the current exhibitions at the Unterlinden Museum in Colmar and the Fine Arts Museum in Strasbourg. What they have in common is landscapes.

L'Alsace pittoresque at the Unterlinden Museum starts at the end of the Ancien Régime and carries through until the upheavals of the industrial revolution to present the invention of the landscape. Maps, paintings, engravings, lithographs and photographs brought together for the occasion evoke the forests, mountains, fields, ruins, and factories, and people in contact with them. The Fine Arts Museum in Strasbourg, for its part, moves forward in time and expands the horizon by offering Le goût de la Nature, Paysages des musées de Strasbourg des XIXe et XXe siècles at the Palais des Rohan. It's a meeting point for major names in the Romantic movement, the Barbizon school, impressionism and pointillism.

Whether the view is of the Alsace plain or the forests of Fontainebleau, we can see just how keen generations of painters have been to magnify their favourite landscapes. These two exhibitions, which present a number of documents not seen before, are also witness to the wealth of the Alsatian collections. The multitude of themes and processes used to represent the region and the landscapes of France form a major artistic heritage that these exhibitions and their catalogues invite us to look at with new eyes.
