Europeana 1914-1918 - major on-line survey

Europeana 1914-1918 is an international digitisation project supported by the European Union. Libraries in eight European countries will be digitising a selection of documents from their collections that relate to the First World War.

The documents will be grouped together in a virtual collection entitled "Europeana" on the cultural portal for libraries, archives and museums in Europe. By the hundredth anniversary of the start of the War, in 2014, the project will provide access to about 400 000 exceptional sources from the First World War period. With this unparalleled collection of sources, Europeana 1914-1918 will create a new basis for historical research into this period..

The consortium behind the project includes the following partners:

  • Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin – Preußischer Kulturbesitz, Berlin
  • Biblioteca Nazionale Centrale, Rome
  • Biblioteca Nazionale Centrale, Florence
  • Bibliothèque Nationale de France, Paris
  • Bibliothèque Nationale et Universitaire, Strasbourg
  • Bibliothèque Royale de Belgique - Koninklijke Bibliotheek van België, Brussels
  • British Library, London
  • Det Kongelige Bibliotek, Copenhagen
  • Narodna Biblioteka Srbije, Belgrade
  • Österreichische Nationalbibliothek, Vienna
  • Istituto Centrale per il Catalogo Unico delle Biblioteche italiane (Biblioteca Universitaria Alessandrina and Istituto per la Storia del Risorgimento Italiano)
  • Clio-online. Fachportal für die Geschichtswissenschaften

As part of this project, we have compiled a questionnaire so that when selecting sources and documents we take account of the desiderata and demands of our future users. The survey is not only directed at researchers, but at anyone interested in the history of the First World War. We would invite you to complete the questionnaire, thereby supporting the development of a vast digitised collection on the First World War in the coming years.
