The University Documentation System ("SUDOC") brings together more than nine million catalogue records for all kinds of documents (documents on paper, e-documents, audiovisual items, microforms, etc) in a collective French catalogue compiled by the libraries and documentation centres of institutions of higher education and research. The BNU is the most important contributor to the catalogue for the number of records contributed (more than 1.1 million).

SUDOC makes it possible to search for a document located anywhere in France, to download or export records, and to obtain bibliographical references. This makes the catalogue very useful for inter-library borrowing ("PEB").

SUDOC is managed by the higher education bibliographical agency (Agence Bibliographique de l'Enseignement Supérieur), which is based in Montpellier.
